If you want to dress to kill during a Halloween party, the best outfit you could wear is a matador costume. Authentic matadors literally did dress to kill since they wear their costume to real bull fights. These elaborate and flamboyant costumes are known traditionally as Traje de luces, which is Spanish for “suit of lights.” This is not surprising since a traditional matador costume usually has a lot of shiny elements, giving the illusion that the suit is actually emitting a light of its own. Dressing up in a good matador costume is a sure fire way of getting the attention of people in any party.

Coleta
A coleta is something that is used to secure a bullfighters head. It is a head accessory that can be very ornate. For costume purposes, however, you can dispense with the coleta altogether.
Capote de paseo
This is a short silk mantle that is usually very ornate and elaborate. This is a necessity for an authentic looking matador costume. Most ready-made costumes already have a decent looking capote de paseo bundled with the costume.
Zapatilla
The Zapatilla is a pair of flat slippers used by traditional matadors. For Halloween purposes, you can use a pair of black male ballet slippers since they look very similar to a zapatilla. Like the matador’s mantle, most premade costumes are also packed with a pair of costume zapatillas.
Camisa
The Camisa is a plain white shirt worn underneath the whole outfit. Only the top part of the shirt is visible and it is usually worn with a corbatin. Most premade costumes also have something like the camisa.
Medias
Medias literally means socks. Traditional matadors usually wear two pairs of medias; one underneath while the other pair is worn outside. The inner pair is usually white while the outer pair is usually pink.
Taleguilla
These are tight fitting tights that usually run up to the knees. Usually, telguillas have ornamental ribbons or tassels near the knees.
Chaquetilla
This is a short jacket with shoulder parts. This is one of the most important parts of the matador costume because it is also one of the most visible. These are usually intricately designed with gold and silver threads for added effect.
Corbatin
This is a small necktie that is usually worn with the camisa.
Castoreno
This is a wide brimmed hat used by matadors. Some costumes have a castoreno with it but this is not a necessity for a convincing costume.
Montera
This is a more common version of the castoreno and many costumes opt to have a montera instead of a castoreno. These hats can be simple or ornate depending on a person’s tastes.
The best accessory you can probably add to your matador costume is a lovely partner dressed in a Spanish dancer costume. If you are able to pull this off, than you and your partner can easily win the best costumed couple award in any Halloween party.
